A prayer to grow in your wonder of God

Lord,

You made each tiny vein in each green leaf. You created the sun and moon and set them in motion to give us light and mark our days. You, who created galaxies and quarks, created me. Would you help me stand in awe of you? Holy Spirit, give me fresh wonder and delight in your majesty and care. Help my heart live in amazement and, in response to your greatness, give you all of me. Thank you for being wonderful. Thank you for loving me.

In Jesus’s name, amen.

Alicia’s Story

“God taught me to wonder on a blustery and blue-skied September day. I was in middle school, sitting in the middle of a luminous forest, Bible and heart open to heaven when I felt God’s presence and my whole life changed. I loved spending time with Jesus in the branches of my grandparents’ crabapple tree, in the patches of early morning light that filtered through my bedroom skylights, and on the warm wooden dock outside my childhood home. I loved Jesus and he loved me.

But as I grew up, the worries of life started getting in the way of my wonder. Instead of looking up in awe, I looked down—at deadlines, decisions, grades, and health—in self-absorption.

Where had that simple trust and awe gone? I asked God to help me reclaim my childlike faith and, as he met me in the pages of his Word, in the intimacy of prayer, and in the stillness of his creation, he taught me to wonder all over again.

I can’t wonder at the stars until I really see them. I can talk, learn, and think about the stars, which conjures up a little bit of wonder in me. But if I really want to stand in awe, I go outside on a night with no moon and just look up. It is then that I am actually blown away. This is the same with God.

Let’s look up. Let’s lose ourselves in wonder. Let’s behold our Creator together. Will you join me on this journey?”
